During the second annual National Leadership Conference for Students in Healthcare, participants engaged in workgroup discussions to help shape the current and future priorities of the Student Health Alliance (SHA) and begin working toward changing the culture of the health system to support transdisciplinary work to achieve our nation’s health objectives, Healthy People 2010.
At the conclusion of the two-day event, participants nominated and ranked several collaborative and educational project ideas and health priority areas for the SHA board to discuss and consider for future action at the second annual planning retreat scheduled for April 2004 in Washington, D.C.
The top four priorities and top three projects that emerged from the discussions are summarized below followed by the refined list of recommendations and strategies for future SHA work. Project ideas/actions are highlighted in red. Health and/or educational priority areas are highlighted in blue. The top four health and educational priority areas nominated by conference participants are highlighted in green
Q: What are the top three health priorities that the Student Health Alliance should address? What else needs to be added?
A: Four health and educational priority areas were identified including:
Access to Healthcare
1. Uninsured populations
2. Transdisciplinary/Interdisciplinary Leadership
3. Leadership Development
Please find below the unedited listed of ideas/priorities nominated by conference participants during the workgroup reporting session. By a show of hands, a straw poll was conducted to rank each of the ideas/priorities on a scale of 1-4.
1. Address soda machines in schools – nutrition/obesity/overweight (2) (OK)
2. Address healthcare access from the:
a. National perspective – SHA-member organizations work toward legislation (i.e. Health Care Access Resolution)
b. Local perspective – student health clinics: SHA garner information to develop toolkits, provide it to students interested in creating local student-run health clinics (6) Interest ( very good)
3. Produce a publication, in the spirit of SHA, to educate members about our individual organizations and professions (monthly publication around an issue, e.g. Diabetes, peer reviewed journal, website, etc.) (very good)
4. Addressing student debt – pursuing legislation by communicating with each other we can find out what our common debt issues are and develop, advance legislation to address these similar issues, e.g. position on interest rates (good)
5. Increase awareness of health policy issues and potentially lobby
6. Project in a box databank (create a comprehensive inventory) (good 3.5)
7. Multidisciplinary community assessment tools to achieve the Nation’s health objectives (i.e. Healthy People 2010 goals) including: what tools are available, what assessment tools are needed, and where needed create or refine tools so they are multidisciplinary (good 3.5-4)
8. SHA needs to have a mechanism for disseminating policy of its own (via website) (editorial note: would also need to address a mechanism to create and agree upon policy)
9. Stand alone programs (may capture brightest and best from who is doing an d promote best practices): tobacco, health disparities, HIV/AIDS, interdisciplinary collaboration, violence, public health workforce and diversity, cultural competencies, leadership development
10. Develop a content clearinghouse with all the above areas (what do we populate with?)
11. Establish a forum for reconciling priority issues (bring differences and similarities to the surface and move issues forward)
12. Bring other professions that impact health and are not necessarily SHA members together to assist SHA better address/tackle issues
13. Address the nursing shortage
14. Play a role in Cover the Uninsured Week (2.5) Can SHA do something constructively about this issue? (very good)
Q: What are the top three projects that the SHA board should consider for future action in the next year?
A: The Top Three Projects, which emerged, include:
1. Develop an independent SHA website to highlight information and projects consistent with the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the SHA
2. Develop a national project catalog that archives projects from each of our student organizations that could be searchable by profession and topic. This would serve as the basis for developing tools to assist SHA organizations’ members to initiate transdisciplinary work on their campus.
3. Develop a journal highlighting and promoting transdisciplinary work and education in the spirit of the SHA.

c. Fundraising
d. Donations
e. Non-renewable grants
f. Different types of funding

h. donations of supplies
i. Ex. Teaming with people in academia who are good at grant writing
2. Requirement that SHA representatives go back to their organizational leadership and ensure information from SHA meetings/projects etc is disseminated to their organizational leadership and members (single master communication, or multiple list of communications)
3. Leadership development – trickle down to the 4 core content areas
a. propose local level workshops (tools to address content areas
b. National network of resources/clearinghouses
c. Modular programs in content areas to mobilize local student action – individual organizations list projects that address these issues so that we do not reinvent the wheel; create best practices in these areas; promote transdisciplinary work from multiple,

a. To facilitate communication (online resource, newsletter, journal etc.)

Value
Create a repository of information for output to our student members in multiple formats – weekly/ monthly emails raising level of awareness about this repository / ideas / tools
6. Make a data/fact sheet to make ourselves relevant to other organizations; speakers bureau to raise level of awareness about our collaborative leadership/ exchange program to encourage SHA representatives to attend and speak at events about our work (promote collaborative efforts, etc)
7. Institutionalize SHA representative position within each of our respective organizations
8. Branding – marketing strategy (SHA is go to organization for what? What will people/students look to SHA for?)
Next Steps:
The projects and priorities identified during this conference will be discussed, prioritized and voted on by the SHA board planning retreat scheduled for April 2004. Please contact the appointed SHA representative for your student organization if you wish to provide additional recommendations/suggestions. The SHA board meets regularly via conference call.
