Clinical Medicine – Public Health
Carolyn V. Brown M.D., MPH
May, 2004

In the past, there have been on-again/off-again efforts between clinical medicine and public health in Alaska.

I believe a viable working collaboration between clinical medicine (Alaska State Medical Association – ASMA) and public health (Alaska Public Health Association – ALPHA) is possible and that it will enhance individual and population health for Alaskans.

There are currently collaborations at national levels among the American Medical Association (AMA), American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), American Public Health Association (APHA), and the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM).  Some have called this the Medicine-Public Health Initiative (MPHI).

I believe we can do valuable work in clinical medicine and public health in Alaska.  I would propose that we consider some of the following:

1.       Heart Beat articles about clinical medicine and public health (and possibly an ASMA journal edition in the future).
2.       Possible involvements with Take Heart Alaska for cardiovascular health issues, secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, tobacco issues, fluoride issues and other clinical medicine-public health issues.
3.       Invitation to clinical medicine physicians to attend the ALPHA Health Summit (December) where practicing clinical physicians will present on issue of clinical medicine and public health importance (Continuing Medical Education-CME brownie points - will be available).
4.       Possible invitation for clinical medical physicians to speak at the ALPHA Health Summit in their area of expertise (with CMEs of course).
5.       Address the issues of:
        •     What can ALPHA do for ASMA and individual healthcare?
        •     What can ASMA do for ALPHA and the public’s health?
        •     What is important legislatively and pro-actively for individual and public health?
6.       Can ASMA and ALPHA develop a position about a shared view of health and illness for individual patients and populations.  What skills can we bring to deal with these two dimensions?

The PEARLS for this endeavor:

1.  No cost to ASMA
2.  Good public relations for both ASMA and ALPHA
3.  Potential increase of membership for both ASMA and ALPHA
4.  We just might learn something useful from each other

Motion:
I move:
a.     That the ASMA elect a collaborative and working relationship with ALPHA for mutually defined programs
b.     That the ASMA Trustees be empowered to work with the Board of Directors of the ALPHA in the development of this clinical medicine and public health collaborative work
c.     That a report of this work be provided to the next House of Delegates of the ASMA
